Schedule an Editing Project

Type of Project
This will be an opportunity for us to learn about when you expect to use our services and what level of input you require (e.g. preparation of templates, style guides, and/or timelines based on Funding Opportunity Announcements, and/or editing of early drafts for content and responsiveness to funding agency scoring criteria, versus polishing of language only). This will enable us to set aside an appropriate amount of time for our work on your grant.
Typically this will be a first draft of the Specific Aims page (or equivalent), and ideally it will be sent to us 2 months before the funding agency deadline. Timing of sending us a revised version and other documents to be edited can subsequently be discussed with the editor. Should you find that you cannot adhere to this schedule, please let us know as soon as possible.
Preferred Editor
Level of Editing Requested
Proofing for grammar, typographical mistakes, and other errors (provided for all projects)
Suggestions toward improving text flow and sentence/paragraph structure; highlighting significance of the research; and, in the case of multi-author documents, achieving a single voice
Review from the perspective of a non-specialist reviewer; on request, feedback on how well scoring criteria for grants are covered

Billing

  • For billing see our hourly rates and project time ranges.
  • Clients from the University of Iowa who are not affiliated with a department that fully subsidizes the SERCC editing services (see list of supporting departments) should provide an MFK.
  • Clients from outside the University of Iowa will be billed by invoice and they will be able to pay by credit card or check.

Once you submit this form we will contact you to confirm that your project has been scheduled. In the meantime you can submit your document(s) to COM-ScientificEditing@uiowa.edu. The documents should be submitted in Word format and, other than the Specific Aims page, they will ideally be submitted together. If time is an issue, certain subsections of the Research Strategy can be submitted as they are ready, but the smallest acceptable units are:

  • Specific Aims page (or equivalent); ideally the first draft will be submitted by 2 months, and a revision by 4 weeks, before the funding agency deadline.
  • Significance and Innovation sections (or equivalents)
  • Approach section (or equivalent)
  • Any others (e.g., Abstract, Project Narrative, Introduction, Biosketches, Vertebrate Animals)

We look forward to working with you on your project.
