Emily Hagan
Emily joined the SERCC as a Scientific Editing Intern in January 2026. She is a fourth-year PhD candidate in the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology at the University of Iowa. Her research, under the mentorship of Dr. Sarah Ferri, focuses on understanding the mechanisms of social deficits and sex bias in neurodevelopmental disorders. Previously, she completed a master's degree at Kansas City University where she studied the inner workings of the Plasma Membrane Calcium ATPase in diabetes. Since then, she has co-authored a book chapter that describes the need to consider age, sex, and study design (e.g., developmental and longitudinal assessments) in research on behavior changes that emerge across the lifespan. By participating in the SERCC internship program, Emily aims to prepare herself for a career that is centered on scientific editing, writing, and communication.
