Jennifer Y. Barr, PhD
Jennifer has worked in the Scientific Editing and Research Communication Core (SERCC) since 2017, first as a scientific editor and writing consultant, and currently as a Grant Writer in the Large-Scale Proposal Development Service (LSPDS), a joint initiative of the SERCC and the Carver College of Medicine Research Administration Support Office (CCOM RASO). Jennifer has experience writing and editing large-scale proposals (NIH S-, P-, and T-series), as well as providing feedback on less complex proposals (e.g., NIH R-, K-, and F-series; NSF CAREER) and on scientific manuscripts. In addition, she presents lectures on scientific writing to graduate and professional students; runs the SERCC internship program; develops resources to assist researchers in their scholarly activity; attends and presents on scientific writing and editing topics at national conferences; and frequently participates in professional development workshops to keep abreast of funding agency priorities and guidelines, particularly for the NIH. Jennifer received her PhD from the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology in 2015, and completed her post-doctoral training in the University of Iowa Department of Pediatrics. During her postdoc she interned with the Scientific Editing Service (precursor of the SERCC), where she organized and co-directed the Scientists Writers’ Workshop, which provided writing support for trainees in several departments within the CCOM.
